How to choose a hosting provider: 9 things worth checking

By the Hosstec teamOctober 20, 20266 min read

A practical checklist for comparing web hosts: uptime, backups, support, renewal prices, data location and more.

Hosting pages all look alike. The differences show up in the details, and most of them are easy to check before you pay.

  1. Uptime commitment. Look for a written guarantee and what the host offers if it misses it.
  2. Backups. Ask how often, where they are stored, and whether you can restore them yourself.
  3. Support channels and hours. Test them with a pre-sales question and note how fast and how clearly they answer.
  4. Renewal price. Introductory prices often rise. Read the renewal line, not only the first-term price.
  5. Server location. Pick a data center near most of your visitors.
  6. Security basics. Free SSL, a firewall, malware scanning and two-factor login on the control panel.
  7. Resource limits. Disk, bandwidth, CPU and the number of processes. Unlimited rarely means unlimited.
  8. Control panel. A familiar panel makes migrations and daily tasks faster.
  9. Exit terms. Check the refund window and how easy it is to export your data.

A quick test

Before moving a real site, open a ticket with a technical question and see what you get back. A short, correct answer within hours is a good sign. A copy-pasted reply is not.
